About The Prelude Orchestra
Ensemble Program
​
Prelude Orchestra is Katy Youth Symphony’s entry-level string ensemble, created especially for young students in grades K–5 who are new to music and would like to learn to play Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass. This program is ideal for beginners with little to no prior experience, and serves as a welcoming introduction to the world of orchestra and string playing.

Our Mission
The Prelude Orchestra reflects our core mission: to provide accessible, high-quality music education to students of all backgrounds across the Katy community. We believe every child deserves the opportunity to learn an instrument, build confidence, and experience the joy of performing—regardless of their starting point.
What Students Will Learn

In Prelude Orchestra, students will:

Learn to play a string instrument (choose between violin, viola, cello, or bass)

Gain basic skills in instrument care, posture, and technique

Learn to read music and count rhythm

Practice ensemble skills, including playing with a group and following a conductor
-
Participate in live performance opportunities to showcase their progress
Instruction is paced appropriately for young beginners, with a focus on building foundational skills in a fun, supportive, and encouraging environment.


Who Can Join?

Any students in grades K through 5 (all ISD's and homeschool) who want to learn to play a string instrument

Little or No previous music instrument or orchestra experience required

A positive attitude and willingness to learn
Rehearsals & Commitment

Weekly rehearsals take place at Paetow High School.

Students are expected to attend rehearsals regularly and participate in scheduled performances
-
Practice at home is encouraged to help students build confidence and retain skills
-
Private lessons are not required, but are encouraged for the growth of the students musicianship.
Instruments & Materials
Families may rent or purchase instruments from a local music shop. Recommendations and resources for rentals will be provided after registration. Students will also need:

Music stand (for home practice)

Method books and sheet music (included or available for purchase)

Rock stop (for cello/bass students)
Support for Parents
We guide parents every step of the way—from helping choose the right instrument, to providing clear communication, to preparing for performances. You do not need a musical background to help your child succeed!
Tuition & Registration

Annual tuition: $590

Includes weekly group instruction, sheet music, performance opportunities, and participation in end-of-season concerts
