Our Programs
How We Serve Our Community
Katy Youth Symphony (KYS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing high-quality music education and performance opportunities to young musicians in Katy, West Houston and the surrounding communities. Our mission is to bring students together to learn, grow, perform, and serve—right here in their hometown—while fostering a lifelong appreciation for music. Through our year-round programs and seasonal camps, we aim to be a valuable resource for families and support music education at all levels.

Grades K–5 | Beginner Level
The Prelude Orchestra is our entry-level ensemble designed for young students who are new to playing an instrument. No prior ensemble experience is required. Students receive instruction in note reading, instrument technique, and group playing. This is a supportive and fun way for beginners to start their orchestral journey and build a solid musical foundation.

Late Intermediate to Advanced Level
In the Ensemble Band, students explore dynamic and challenging repertoire that pushes them to the next level of musical excellence. With a strong focus on teamwork, precision, and expressive playing, this group is designed for intermediate woodwind, brass, and percussion students who are ready to grow as ensemble musicians.
Through engaging rehearsals and advanced musical instruction, students will strengthen their technique, master more complex rhythms and harmonies, and experience the excitement of bringing music to life as a unified band.
*Students will also have the opportunity to participate in Full Orchestra (strings & winds)

Philharmonic Orchestra
Early Intermediate to Intermediate Level
The Philharmonic Orchestra is for students who have developed foundational skills and are ready to expand their ensemble playing. Musicians in this group work on more complex repertoire, improve their technical skills, and learn to perform in a full string orchestra setting. This level helps bridge the gap between beginner and advanced ensemble experience.

Early Intermediate to Intermediate Level
In Concert Band, students with at least one year of experience dive into a variety of fun and exciting pieces that strike the perfect balance between challenge and achievability. This ensemble is the ideal place for young musicians to build confidence and grow their musical skills in a supportive setting.
With a focus on core fundamentals like rhythm, dynamics, tone, and harmony, students also develop essential ensemble skills—learning to listen, blend, and perform as part of a cohesive musical team.

Chamber Orchestra
Late Intermediate to Advanced Level
The Chamber Orchestra is our most advanced ensemble, made up of experienced student musicians who are ready for challenging repertoire and high-level ensemble work. Students refine their technique, musicianship, and leadership skills while performing standard orchestral literature and participating in special performances throughout the year.
